On July 9, 2011 SOUTH SUDAN formally seceded from SUDAN and issued its first two stamps in Juba, the capital. South Sudan was admitted to the United Nations just 5 days later on July 14.

The two stamps above were part of a set of 3 prepared to be issued on July 9, 2011. The third stamp depicted the National Coat of Arms. This design was deemed incorrect and the stamp was withdrawn from sale.

As often happens, some examples of the National Coat of Arms have been sold on the open market. We list them as "2A" below.
